DR. KATIE BURNS • LICENSED CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST • ATLANTA, GA • VIRTUAL + PSYPACT
You’re in the right place if:
You spend hours checking, analyzing, researching or asking for reassurance.
You can't tell whether a rule belongs to an eating disorder, OCD or both.
Food, exercise, weight or your body image take up more space than you want them to.
You have intrusive thoughts that feel disturbing or nothing like who you are.
You know the fear doesn't make sense and still can't stop responding to it.
You wonder if it's "bad enough" to get help.
SPECIALIZED CARE
OCD and eating disorders can both make your world smaller sending you into patterns of avoidance, rituals, rigid rules, perfectionism, and attempts to feel certain or in control. Treatment can help you understand what keeps these patterns going and begin responding differently.
OCD & Eating Disorder Treatment
-
OCD isn't just about being organized or particular. It involves intrusive thoughts, images, urges, or sensations that leave you questioning yourself and searching for certainty.
You may find yourself checking, seeking reassurance, avoiding, researching, reviewing things in your mind, or performing other rituals to feel safe or “sure.”
I specialize in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold standard treatment for OCD. ERP helps you gradually approach what OCD tells you to fear while changing how you respond to uncertainty and the urge to perform compulsions.
-
When food, movement, weight, and/or your body becomes governed by fear and rigid rules, it can begin to take up more and more of your life.
I specialize in Anorexia, Bulimia, ARFID, Binge Eating Disorder, Body Image Concerns, Disordered Eating. Treatment focuses on understanding what's maintaining these patterns, reducing avoidance and rigidity, increasing flexibility, and helping you move toward a relationship with food, movement, and your body that leaves more room for the rest of your life.
-
Sometimes OCD and eating disorders don't fit neatly into separate boxes.
Food, exercise, body image, health concerns, perfectionism, and the need for certainty or control can become intertwined with obsessive-compulsive patterns. A behavior may look similar on the surface while being driven by very different fears or beliefs underneath. Understanding what's driving the behavior matters.
-
Anxiety can show up as constant worry, overthinking, panic, avoidance, or feeling like you always need to be prepared for what might go wrong. I treat anxiety disorders, panic, phobias, agoraphobia, health anxiety, social anxiety, and other anxiety-related concerns. Treatment focuses on helping you approach what anxiety has taught you to fear, respond differently, and build more freedom and flexibility in your life.
-
While OCD, eating disorders, and anxiety are my primary specialties, I also work with concerns that frequently occur alongside them, including PTSD, little “t” trauma, Life transitions, Grief, Stress, Interpersonal relationships, People Pleasing, Perfectionism, and Imposter Phenomena.
MEET
I'm a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of OCD, eating disorders, and the complex ways they can overlap.
My clinical experience spans specialty eating disorder treatment, university counseling centers, community mental health, hospital programs, and outpatient care. I received specialized OCD training through the International OCD Foundation’s Behavior Therapy Training Institute (BTTI), an intensive training in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD and related disorders with expert clinical consultation. I have treated people with OCD and ED in all different levels of care.
My connection to this work is also personal. OCD and eating disorders have touched my family, giving me an appreciation for the courage and vulnerability that can come with pursuing recovery.

EVIDENCE-BASED • INDIVIDUALIZED • COLLABORATIVE
In eating disorder treatment, exposure-based strategies may also be thoughtfully incorporated when they support recovery. This might include approaching feared foods, sensations, situations, changes in routine, or other experiences that have become dictated by anxiety, avoidance, or rigid rules.
I integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help you build flexibility, develop a different relationship with distressing thoughts and emotions, tolerate uncertainty, and make choices based on what matters to you.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is central to how I treat OCD. Together, we'll identify the fears, doubts, triggers, compulsions, and attempts to gain certainty that keep the OCD cycle going.
We'll collaboratively develop exposures that help you gradually approach feared thoughts, feelings, sensations, or situations while practicing new ways of responding rather than relying on compulsions, reassurance, or avoidance to make the discomfort go away.
